Role
Who you are
- Rising junior or senior (entering your 3rd or 4th year after this internship)
- Demonstrates genuine interest in financial trends, technology innovation, and applying classroom knowledge to real business challenges
- Comfortable working in Excel/Google Sheets; curious about how AI tools can speed up analysis work
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to communicate findings clearly to non-finance stakeholders
- Self-starter, comfortable with ambiguity in a fast-paced environment
- When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required. This includes non-office days for hybrid employees
What the job involves
- As a Finance Intern on Gusto’s Finance, BizOps & Strategy (FBOS) team, you’ll spend 12 weeks working on real projects that shape how we run the business. You’ll support leaders in Customer Experience, EPD, and Corporate Development, helping turn financial data into decisions about margin, cost to serve, and resourcing
- Day to day, that means building financial reports, analyzing costs to find savings, and partnering with teams across Gusto on projects that move the team’s roadmap forward. Along the way, you’ll use AI tools and automation to work faster and go deeper than a traditional finance internship allows
- You’ll be paired with a dedicated mentor and a team manager who will support you from onboarding through your final presentation. By the end of the summer, you’ll have seen firsthand how finance works as a true partner to the business
- You'll join Gusto's Finance, BizOps & Strategy (FBOS) team, which provides financial, operational, and strategic support at the corporate, department, and product level as we scale to serve even more customers
- Our partners sit directly inside business orgs like Customer Experience, EPD, and Corporate Development, translating financial data into operating decisions on margin, cost to serve, and resourcing
- As Gusto evolves into an AI native company, we're using automation, predictive insights, and smarter data systems to define and defend our business model while accelerating growth. As a Finance Intern, you'll see firsthand how finance works as a true partner to the business rather than a back office function
- Work cross-functionally on high-impact projects that use data, automation, and AI-powered tools
- Build and maintain recurring financial/operational reporting for your partner org
- Analyze cost or margin drivers and summarize findings for non-finance stakeholders
- Support a defined roadmap project end-to-end alongside your mentor
- Partner with CX/EPD/Corp Dev counterparts on data requests and ad hoc analysis
Application process
- Deadline to Apply: Monday, October 26th at 4:00 pm PST
- We’ll be offering only one cohort start and end date (Cohort 1: May 17, 2027 - August 6, 2027)
Our take
For many small businesses, vital administrative tasks such as payroll, taxes, and benefits are manual tasks that take time and energy - which many SMB owners don’t have. The co-founders of Gusto all come from small business backgrounds, which is why they created a platform that would handle employee payments, benefits administration, and compliance support specifically for small businesses.
The company may have started slowly, as the founders focused on nailing each individual aspect of Gusto’s operations, but has now skyrocketed to unicorn status with more than 400,000 customers and a multi-billion dollar valuation. And in 2021, Gusto began acquiring other companies to strengthen its offering and position in a competitive market, including the likes of Ardius, Symmetry and Guideline.
Through its continued acquisitions and fundraising efforts, the company has carved out a strong position for itself in the space. It continues to expand its platform, for example by partnering with Parafin to launch a payroll line of credit for small businesses, and more recently launching Cofounder, an AI teammate tailored to the needs of small businesses.
