Role
Who you are
- 7+ years of professional full-stack software development experience, including 1-2 years of engineering management, hiring, and team-building
- Demonstrated ability to independently solve complex technical problems with clean, robust, and efficient code. You should be able to identify edge cases and contribute effectively to critical path technical work
- Strong technical leadership and product acumen, with a history of taking complex problems and solving them elegantly
- A commitment to growing talent through clear, thoughtful feedback and personalized development plans
- Exceptional cross-functional collaboration skills, enabling you to navigate tough conversations, make hard decisions and tradeoffs, and ensure clear communication and alignment with product, design, and other engineering teams
- Experience working in ambiguous, fast-moving teams that have built and shipped high-quality products at scale, demonstrating the ability to find independent solutions and adapt quickly to evolving challenges
- Excitement about Cedar's mission and a commitment to solving problems for our patients
- Strong computer science fundamentals (or similar experience) are expected
What the job involves
- As part of our continued growth and commitment to building impactful solutions, we are excited to hire an Engineering Manager to lead a newly formed product engineering team
- EMs at Cedar are responsible for their team’s success, balancing technical leadership with people development
- You’ll be deeply involved in the engineering and design processes while coaching, mentoring, and guiding your team toward impactful results
- With a strong user focus, you’ll collaborate closely with engineers to create scalable technical solutions and communicate effectively across teams and senior leadership
- In this role, you’ll take initiative and drive progress without waiting for permission or consensus - we love folks who thrive in a high-autonomy environment
- You’ll prioritize simplicity in design, creating solutions that are elegant, durable, and easy to maintain
- With a deep focus on user experience, you’ll build products that solve real problems and delight users
- You’ll set and uphold a high quality bar, ensuring the team delivers polished, thoughtful products with attention to detail
- You’ll take ownership beyond traditional role boundaries, offering strong perspectives on technical direction, customer experience, and product strategy while fostering a culture of accountability, excellence, and continuous improvement
- Lead a full stack product engineering team of 4-6 engineers, balancing technical expertise with people management
- Establish and nurture a team culture that’s empowering, supportive, and committed to engineering and product excellence
- Collaborate closely with partners (product, design, etc.) to deliver outcomes while balancing technical quality and user experience
- Mentor engineers through coaching, feedback, and development plans that support personal and professional growth
- Build a diverse, high-performing team through thoughtful recruiting and onboarding
- Drive your team’s roadmap creation and execution, working with Product to prioritize & scope
- Cultivate an environment of trust through clear communication and transparency
- Contribute to architectural and design discussions, ensuring technical solutions are scalable, maintainable, and aligned with best practices
- You'll foster a culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement, encouraging the team to proactively identify technical debt, suggest architectural improvements, and optimize for efficiency
Our take
Over $1B is said to be lost annually by physicians as a result of inefficient and disjointed healthcare billing practices. The subsequently low patient satisfaction rates lead to poorer care, and real losses for providers who see patients switching away from their plans.
Cedar looks to remedy these issues with a selection of consumer-facing services which streamline billing, insurance and healthcare processes. Healthcare billing concerns a huge percentage of US adults, so optimizing patient satisfaction is of increasing concern - a great opportunity for the company.
After acquiring competing patient finance streamlining service OODA Health in 2021, Cedar netted substantial funds and launched its Payer Intelligence Layer. This has allowed it to integrate data from insurers and providers to create a single source of information. The company was also endorsed by the Montana Hospital Association's shared services division, to be listed as its only preferred patient financial engagement technology.
