Who you are
- The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of indirect tax principles, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment
- 2+ years of indirect tax experience. Experience in other areas of tax (Canadian/International income tax, transfer pricing) an asset but not required
- An interest in expanding knowledge on global VAT, sales tax, income tax and transfer pricing
- CPA Designation a strong asset
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including experience with data manipulation and analysis (e.g., pivot tables, vlookups)
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a high degree of accuracy
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate tax concepts to non-tax professionals
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Experience with ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, NetSuite) is a plus
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment
- A proactive and solution-oriented approach to problem-solving
What the job involves
- Kobo's is seeking a Tax Analyst to join our Finance team
- Reporting to the Senior Tax Manager, this person will help support our global tax function
- This role offers an excellent opportunity to expand your tax knowledge and contribute to the continuous improvement of our tax processes
- Prepare monthly/quarterly/annual sales tax and VAT returns (including GST/HST/QST/PST filings)
- Prepare monthly sales tax/VAT reconciliations
- Liaise with external tax consultants to compile necessary tax documentation and workpapers for tax compliance
- Review notices of assessment and communicate with tax authorities, supporting analyses required for tax audits
- Stay up-to-date on legislative changes related to Canadian and foreign indirect tax
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of tax processes, controls, and documentation
- Participate in ad hoc tax projects
- Assist with the implementation and maintenance of tax software and automation tools
- Document and maintain accurate records of tax filings, payments, and related documentation
- Analyze large datasets to identify tax optimization opportunities and potential compliance issues

Our take
Long-form content is having a resurgence. That’s great news for the e-reader industry, of which Rakuten’s Kobo battles with Amazon’s Kindle for ownership.
The e-reader giant has changed tack in recent years to pursue growth via integrations and partnerships. A notable example is its native device integration with Pocket, a wishlist app loved by millions of readers.
The company is hoping that these partnerships and product improvements will allow it to finally break the US market where it most struggles for market share with Kindle.
Amazon has consistently shown its willingness to drop prices to protect its position in any market it plays in. That means that Kobo will have to demonstrate true product superiority to make a dent while protecting its margins.
