Who you are
- The ideal candidate is someone who can collaborate across the engineering organization to empower product development with the right systems and services to unlock their velocity, foster discussions about core efficiency or performance problems in our applications, and ultimately put their hands on the keyboard to “lead from the front” and help diagnose and solve problems in production.
- Experienced senior engineering leader who is still comfortable pushing code to production
- Adept at managing and mentoring high-performing teams, nurturing talent, and guiding individuals toward professional growth and development
- Proven track record of maintaining services and systems
- Experienced in crafting long-term strategies and managing technical roadmaps that pave the way for future growth
- Capable of running agile organizations at scale and with a sense of urgency to deliver quality software to solve customer problems
- Demonstrated experience in promoting positive culture and diversity throughout a large engineering organization
What the job involves
- We are seeking an experienced Director of Engineering to help us build and maintain highly secure, available, and performant infrastructure at Clio
- The successful candidate will have a mandate to secure and maintain all staging and production environments at Clio
- Authoring, reviewing, and shipping infrastructure-as-code across all of Clio’s environments
- Automation of friction points and creation of observability tooling to accelerate investigation and reduce time to resolve, and then training and advocacy for its use across the Clio engineering organization
- Directly supervise, mentor, and collaborate with systems engineering managers and individual contributors who are in the thick of it every day
- Navigate the Clio Engineering department to understand product bugs, features and launches, find infrastructure dependencies or gaps, and ultimately deliver impactful solutions that enable Clio’s developers to deploy better products, faster
- Partner with Clio’s product development teams to support them in ensuring all of Clio’s products meet a high bar for security, performance, reliability, availability and change velocity
- Work closely with the recruiting/people team to actively recruit and hire top talent to support Clio’s ambitious growth plans for our infrastructure and development teams

Modern law firms increasingly manage their work digitally but the lack of a specialised remote solution means that workflows have become fragmented. This leads to legal practice managers having to juggle multiple software solutions across various devices.
Clio provides a legal practice management platform designed for law firms, allowing users to manage billing for legal aid cases, access and manage documents and store files across multiple devices. Whilst other startups are operating in this niche, Clio has uniquely focussed on synchronisation across remote devices and on a wide range of integrations, allowing the user to access information from other industry standard software such as Xero and Klyant from within a single interface.
Clio has raised a large amount of investment capital, most recently in a 2021 Series E round which saw the company attain unicorn status with a valuation exceeding $1 billion. This funding is being used to accelerate its product development, hire additional talent, and for expansion into new markets with a focus on the EMEA region, particularly the UK and Ireland.
