  • 8+ years of direct product management experience, including 5+ years of building technical internal products for a medium sized software Engineering organization with a focus on Platform Engineering, Platform-as-a-Service, and/or Engineering Tooling
  • Has executed Engineering Organizational goals to improve engineering efficiency with demonstrated results
  • Successfully collaborated with Infrastructure, Security, IT, and Product Engineering teams on balancing engineering efficiency in alignment with compliance and security
  • Strong partnership with technical stakeholders in very technical domains
  • Experienced crafting a strategic vision and roadmaps, evangelizing your vision, and executing against it over multiple years

What the job involves

  • We’re looking for high-autonomy, entrepreneurial Product Managers to come build high-impact solutions for small businesses and their employees. We believe in high-ownership Product Managers who operate like business owners - owning an entire roadmap end to end and shipping product all the way from strategy through to the nitty gritty details (some describe this kind of role as a “GM” type role)
  • Our Product team is lean, which means you’ll have a high degree of impact and ownership
  • We’re here to serve small and medium businesses. Gusto has a strong mission-driven culture, and we care deeply about lifting up these business owners
  • Platform Orchestration is a newly formed team driving a key strategic initiative to transform our infrastructure capabilities into a self-service internal developer platform. Gusto’s goals of scaling and innovating are being hindered by our bespoke tooling and manual workflows
  • This role is critical for us to prioritize and execute on the capabilities that provide our 600+ engineers with Golden Paths and Paved Roads for them to deliver value to our customers
  • As the first Product Manager in the Infrastructure group, you will have an opportunity to mature our Platform Engineering initiatives and our entire engineering organization
  • Ownership: You will own the vision, strategy, and roadmap to transform Gusto’s Infrastructure group into a Platform Engineering organization
  • North Star: Build reliable workflows that allow engineers to independently interact with our setup and self-serve the infrastructure they need to run their apps and services
  • Collaborate: You will work closely with the 600+ Engineering ICs and leaders across Gusto to drive the roadmap for a highly visible initiative
  • Collaboration with multiple Engineering teams and cross-functional stakeholders is essential. Must be available to work within PT or MT business hours
  • Infuse an Engineering-only team with a product mindset
  • Develop or utilize frameworks to assess ourselves and improve the maturity of our Platform Engineering capabilities

Our take

For many small businesses, vital administrative tasks such as payroll, taxes, and benefits are manual tasks that take time and energy which many SMB owners don’t have. The three co-founders of Gusto – all coming from small business backgrounds – collaborated on a Fintech company that would handle employee payments, benefits administration, and compliance support specifically for small businesses.

The company may have started slowly, as the founders focused on nailing each individual aspect of Gusto’s operations, but has now skyrocketed to unicorn status with more than 200,000 customers and a multi-billion dollar valuation. In 2021, Gusto began acquiring other companies to strengthen its offering and its position in a competitive market, including two other fintech startups, Ardius and Symmetry.

Through its continued acquisitions and fundraising efforts, the company has carved out a strong position for itself in the space. Although Gusto has found itself impacted by the macroeconomic situation, through the significant effect it has had on its clientele, the company still appears positive for the future after raising funds in 2023 that will see it reach key profitability benchmarks. It continues to consolidate its platform, for example by integrating with OpenComp to grant its users access to the company's Compensation Intelligence Platform.
