Our take

The collaborative whiteboard space is a crowded one with major players acquiring some serious money. With tools like Figma's FigJam, Miro, and even Apple's new Freeform app proving there's enormous demand for digital canvases where teams can work together. However, most of these platforms lock you into their ecosystems, require logins, and come with rigid approaches to collaboration.

tldraw is taking a refreshingly open approach to this with a simple, free to use collaborative whiteboard that requires no account, just open it, start drawing, and share the link. But the real magic is the TypeScript SDK that lets developers build their own canvas applications. Think "Whiteboard-as-a-Service" with all the complex features like selection, rotation, undo/redo, and multiplayer sync that could take years to build yourself.

Founded in 2022, tldraw has grown incredibly fast, with 40,000 GitHub stars, 70,000 weekly npm installs, and 8,000 Discord members. And already, tldraw is powering hundreds of projects from drawing apps to AI video platforms to virtual classrooms. Now, tldraw plans to open-source its website and expand its collaborative features. With some serious momentum, it's shaping up to be a major player in how people build and use visual tools on the web.
