Company mission

Anne Boden founded Starling with a clear goal: to build a bank that would help you manage your money, all from one app. Their vision is to give everyone clarity and control over their money so they have the opportunity to enjoy a healthy financial life.

Role

Who you are

  • Ideally you’d be have experience/knowledge of banking or finance and an interest in delivering better experiences
  • Experience working on mobile applications, specifically on banking apps would be desirable but not essential
  • Someone who’s hands on, keen to learn and can deal with ambiguity
  • Someone with experience identifying the most important issues, compromising with others involved and coming up with the best solution possible
  • Have worked with tech teams before helping to get things built

What the job involves

  • At Starling we spend our time building products that we’re really proud of
  • We focus on the experience, often delivering things with real polish but sometimes making a fast strategic move
  • We’re always working closely and collaboratively with our engineers to solve problems, build new products and improve existing ones
  • We focus on what is right for our customers and stick to our values
  • We think being good at product requires clear communication, a sense of focus, and to challenge the conventional ways of doing things
  • We’re open-minded when it comes to hiring, we care more about skills and attitude than specific experience or qualifications
  • If you care about finding elegant solutions to difficult problems and advocating for the customer, we’d love to hear from you
  • We’re looking to expand our product team to help us build products and features across our app, online bank and even our internal tools
  • There’s a wide variety of things we work on and we’re a small team that spends our time working alongside engineers to make our products the best they can be
  • There’s lots of scope to get involved in all aspects of Starling and we’re looking for someone who is keen to get stuck in and work collaboratively
  • Helping understand customers needs and lead on the creation and updating of products big and small
  • Help explore opportunities across the product, getting stuck in to data, working on customer research and talking to lots of others right across Starling
  • Working closely with our Customer Service teams and Product QAs to make sure we maintain a high quality product and identify trends or problems

Application process

  • Interviewing is a two way process and we want you to have the time and opportunity to get to know us, as much as we are getting to know you!
  • Our interviews are conversational and we want to get the best from you, so come with questions and be curious
  • In general you can expect the below, following a chat with one of our Talent Team:
  • Stage 1 - 30 mins with one of the team
  • Stage 2 - 60 mins interview with two team members
  • Stage 3 - 45 min final with an executive and a member of the people team

Our take

Starling started life focused on consumer banking, they have since found most of their success by competing in the business banking space. They’ve caught up with Tide and beaten the likes of Monzo and Revolut to a more complete offering for businesses.

This progress resulted in them receiving a £100m grant in April 2019 from a body created to boost competition in SME banking, which they're using to accelerate building a full suite of digital banking products: intelligent forecasting tools, and digitally-enabled relationship management functions as well as lending products.

As well as continuing to expand in the UK, they’re expanding in Europe. They’re imminently launching an international bank in Dublin, which will allow Starling to offer its current account across the European Union after Brexit.

Banking for small businesses has historically been ignored even though the experience is poor. Starling is in tune with knowing what their customers want, and they continue to build out their range of third-party products within its banking app thanks to support from its open API. They currently have 11 integrations, including Xero, but that figure continues to grow.
