What the job involves
- As a member of our Community Safety team, you will play a critical role in making transportation safer for all
- Lyft is looking for an experienced and highly motivated Staff Product Manager to help build and lead product initiatives that enhance the safety of Lyft’s community of riders and drivers
- You will be at the forefront of defining, building, and scaling features that drive trust, protect the community, and ensure seamless experiences that prioritize the physical and psychological safety of our riders and drivers
- You’ll partner with cross-functional teams including engineering, design, legal, data science, research, and operations to ensure we build products that deliver on both short-term and long-term Community Safety goals
- You will lead the roadmap and strategic vision for key Community Safety initiatives – customer facing, backend, and AI-based – and your work will be critical to ensuring that Lyft continues to foster a safe and trusted environment for its customers
- As a Staff Product Manager, you will also mentor and guide your team, ensuring their professional growth and fostering a collaborative environment
- Lead the Community Safety product strategy by developing and executing a robust roadmap to enhance safety features and tools that reduce Community Safety incidents and protect the community
- Own end-to-end 0-1 product development, from ideation through launch, working closely with engineering, design, data science, research, and operations teams. You excel at explaining complex technical concepts in simple terms to ensure effective cross-functional communication
- Partner with legal and compliance teams to identify tradeoffs and ensure all safety-related features comply with regulatory requirements and align with company goals
- Identify and prioritize opportunities to enhance safety measures, using data-driven insights, customer feedback, and industry trends to influence decisions. Your comfort with data will allow you to drive key decisions and iterate on product experiences
- Define and track key performance metrics related to Community Safety broadly, and also Community Safety features; iterate on product experiences based on data-driven insights
- Conduct market and competitive research to stay ahead of emerging safety trends, potential threats, and new technologies in the transportation and Community Safety space
- Collaborate with the broader Lyft product teams to ensure that safety initiatives are seamlessly integrated across the rider and driver experiences
- Advocate for the safety of our community, driving alignment across teams and leadership to prioritize and deliver critical initiatives
- Demonstrate the value you hold in interpersonal relationships, consistently working to build trust with internal and external partners
- Serve as a thought leader on Community Safety topics, representing Lyft externally with stakeholders, regulators, and partners when needed
- Demonstrate excellent business judgment by carefully balancing company priorities with customer needs, ensuring well-thought-out decisions that serve both
Our take
Lyft has aimed for consistent growth, making sure to pitch itself as a more reliable and friendly ride-sharing option than its main competitor, Uber. Uber has a greater market share and operates globally, but Lyft hopes to compete by its focus on ride-sharing over Uber's more diversified business approach and as a more rider-friendly and greener alternative to Uber.
Operating only in the USA and Canada, Lyft is in a position of being less affected by global events than Uber but also more vulnerable to local conditions. As an example, while it doesn't face the regulatory hurdles around employment rights that Uber does, it is unable to balance out the cost of the unusually expensive US auto insurance across its operations.
In 2022, Lyft acquired PBSC Urban Solutions, a bike-share equipment and technology supplier, allowing Lyft to compete in new verticals and reaffirming its commitment to green transportation. It has also trialed and launched Lyft Assisted, where drivers help passengers from their door into the car to get to medical appointments. These developments chime well with Lyft's unique selling point as a friendlier and more environmentally aware ride-sharing app.
