Who you are
- 8+ years of software engineering experience, including experience with backend systems
- 2-4 years of engineering management experience including coaching, mentoring, and sustaining high-performing teams
- Deep technical expertise in designing, building, scaling, and maintaining high-volume, mission-critical systems, ideally in a product area with a regulatory (or similar) surface area
- Expertise in ensuring operational excellence for critical production systems, including setting and meeting SLOs, robust incident management, and navigating complex compliance landscapes
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills - you’re comfortable navigating complexity and bringing together teams across orgs
- A strong service mindset - you lead with curiosity, care deeply about people, and empower those around you
- Bonus, but a big one: experience with financial and/or other regulatory systems (like Tax!)
What the job involves
- We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our Tax Payments and Filings team. You’ll manage a team of engineers responsible for building adaptable internal tooling systems to organize legal compliance rules, and apply those rules to our internal engine responsible for generating and processing tax payments and filings

- Gusto’s Tax Payments and Filings team exists for the sake of our customers’ peace of mind. Every year, we move billions of dollars in tax payments and file millions of tax filings with the thousands of state, local, and federal tax agencies where our customers are located. As compliance rules shift and change over time, so must our systems. Correctness is essential: if we don’t do our jobs correctly, our customers pay - literally
- Build and foster an inclusive, collaborative, and impact-oriented culture
- Coach, mentor, and sustain a high-performing team of engineers, including regular 1:1s and performance coaching
- Maintain cross-functional relationships with key partners in Product, Data, Tax Operations, Tax Filings Compliance, and with engineering and product leaders on other Tax teams
- Help set technical direction on the team, ensuring that we are meeting our compliance commitments, as well as advocating for work to reduce the operational overhead of adapting to changing tax legislation
- Advocate for and build systems that enable us to hold our correctness bar incredibly high, while also enabling iteration, experimentation, and speed
- Work to understand the context-rich Tax domain, to be able to weigh in on the team’s technical decisions
Our take
For many small businesses, vital administrative tasks such as payroll, taxes, and benefits are manual tasks that take time and energy which many SMB owners don’t have. The three co-founders of Gusto – all coming from small business backgrounds – collaborated on a Fintech company that would handle employee payments, benefits administration, and compliance support specifically for small businesses.
The company may have started slowly, as the founders focused on nailing each individual aspect of Gusto’s operations, but has now skyrocketed to unicorn status with more than 400,000 customers and a multi-billion dollar valuation. And in 2021, Gusto began acquiring other companies to strengthen its offering and its position in a competitive market, including two other fintech startups, Ardius and Symmetry.
Through its continued acquisitions and fundraising efforts, the company has carved out a strong position for itself in the space. Although Gusto has found itself impacted by the macroeconomic situation, through the significant effect it has had on its clientele, the company still appears positive for the future after raising funds in 2023 that has seen it reach key profitability benchmarks. It continues to expand its platform, most recently partnering with Parafin to launch a payroll line of credit for small businesses. With a growing suite of services and a clear focus on supporting small businesses through changing economic conditions, Gusto looks set to sustain its momentum and further strengthen its position in the HR and payroll technology market.
