Role
Who you are
- 7+ years of experience in People Operations/Human Resources, including time at a high-growth startup
- Proven experience as a strategic business partner to leaders, especially in coaching managers, shaping team development, and influencing org decisions
- Strong expertise in benefits, compensation, compliance, and People systems (we use ADP WFN, HiBob, Greenhouse, Sequoia, and more)
- A track record of using data and sound judgment to prioritize, make decisions, and drive results at both strategic and tactical levels
- Excellent communication skills—written, verbal, and visual—including experience presenting to senior leadership
- Strong project management skills with the ability to see initiatives through from idea to execution
- Tech-savvy and quick to learn new tools, systems, and processes, with the ability to work independently and bring in others when needed
What the job involves
- As the Director of People Ops, you will manage both the big picture and day-to-day operations of the People function
- You’ll play a critical role in supporting a positive and engaging employee experience for our growing and distributed team
- This role involves a hybrid work approach, balancing in-office collaboration with the ability to work remotely
- Partner closely with our Executive team and people managers to build a performance-driven culture—acting as a coach and thought partner on everything from feedback and team development to org planning and accountability
- Manage and evolve our total rewards program, including compensation and benefits, to help us attract, retain, and motivate top talent
- Build and run People programs across the employee journey, like onboarding, performance, and development, in partnership with leadership and grounded in Mudflap’s mission and values
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams like Talent, Finance, and Legal to stay aligned on hiring, compensation, and systems; help shape scalable, effective People practices
- Support managers through employee relations issues with empathy and clarity, offering practical, solutions-oriented guidance
- Oversee core People operations—including benefits, HRIS, and People data—stepping in when needed to keep things running smoothly and compliantly
- Ensure we comply with all employment laws and internal policies, identifying gaps or inefficiencies and leading thoughtful improvements as we grow
- Support employees to resolve questions/challenges and provide an excellent experience to the Mudflap team
Our take
Owner-operators make up 9% of the truckers on the road, in other words 680,000 small businesses forming the backbone of the U.S’s crucial trucking industry. However, only big fleets get major fuel discounts because they have large gallon volumes, leaving these self-employed truckers to pay full price.
Mudflap is bringing those savings to owner-operators & small fleets. When drivers sign up for the app, they join tens of thousands of users which Mudflap then leverages to drive sales for truck stops which offer discounts on fuel in return. It’s a smart model which massively simplifies the process for earning discounts compared to the old route of a fuel card which requires a credit check.
Stop managers could be sceptical about working with mobile payments in return for a promise of increased demand. However, the company provides its entire network with a Mudflap tablet through which to handle all payment transactions within the network, making it easy for whoever is behind the counter.
