Who you are
- 8+ years of experience in product marketing within a fast-paced consumer technology environment
- Proven track record of developing and executing successful product marketing strategies for consumer brands
- Experience in brand management, including crafting brand narratives and managing brand positioning
- Strong analytical skills and experience using data to inform marketing strategies and decisions
- Exceptional communication and leadership skills, with experience leading cross-functional teams
- Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Business Administration, or related field; Master’s degree preferred
What the job involves
- We are looking for a Director of Consumer Product Marketing to be the first-ever PMM at ThredUp and to lead our product marketing initiatives
- This role would define the function of Product Marketing at ThredUp, while driving the development and execution of new feature launches and go-to-market-plans and campaigns that resonate with and engage our target consumers
- You will play a crucial role in positioning our products effectively in the marketplace, enhancing brand visibility, and accelerating consumer demand, engagement, and loyalty
- Connective Tissue: Understand the business and the customer, then connect the two. Bring together product management, sales, and other teams to ensure the successful launch and promotion of products. Act as the voice of the marketing team and the customer in product decisions, ensuring consumer and brand considerations are at the forefront
- Product Positioning: Develop compelling positioning, naming, messaging for our products that resonate with our target audience and differentiate our offerings in the market
- Strategy Execution: Craft and implement innovative go-to-market plans and campaigns that effectively drive awareness, buzz, customer engagement, and adoption of our products
- Consumer Insights: Create and leverage consumer insights and market trends to inform product strategies and create targeted marketing campaigns that effectively communicate the value of our offerings
- Cross-Functional Leadership: Help define a product and customer vision by establishing a set of customer insights, key metrics and impact, and encourage cross functional teams to bring that vision to life by partnering with product, design, creative, brand, CRM, and more
- Team Development: Establish the PMM function at ThredUp, including team goals, workflows, and best practices that set the team up to scale
- Brand Management: Enhance brand consistency across all product marketing efforts, aligning with ThredUp brand strategies
- Performance Analysis: Monitor and analyze the performance of product marketing campaigns, utilizing insights to refine strategies and achieve marketing objectives
- Innovation: Proactively identify opportunities for feature innovation, funnel optimization, and more throughout existing app and web experiences, and orchestrate experimentation plans across key channels and products. Partner closely with data science and marketing teams to build out roadmaps and testing strategies to drive growth and engagement
- Voice of Customer: Drive a research agenda that equips the product, revenue, and marketing team with data-based customer insights to deliver the right products, experiences, and benefits that solve core user and business needs
Our take
Over 40% of Gen Z consumers claim to have bought used clothing as opposed to 20% of Gen X and Boomers. Yet, despite this change in fashion trends, consumers must often rely on brick-and-mortar thrift stores and unregulated second-hand eCommerce marketplaces in order to access and find pre-owned clothing.
ThredUp provides an online marketplace for the buying and selling of secondhand fashionwear, offering affordable prices on discount clothing whilst promising a regulated and consistent approach to quality and cleanliness standards. The company acquires its clothing through sellers sending packages of clothing, which the company then sifts through to decide what is sellable and what should be returned.
The company went public in 2021 and immediately acquired Remix, a European second-hand fashion outlet, as part of its international expansion plans. It has, however, struggled to achieve profitability thanks to global economic turmoil and a glut of new clothing in the fashion industry, causing prices to drop sharply. It is focusing on reducing its operating costs and expanding its storage capacity. Analysts expect it to weather the current conditions in good form.
