Role
Who you are
- You either have a qualification in user-centric design or some experience in a design-focused role
- You have a strong portfolio with examples of customer-facing products
- You are comfortable working with modern web design tools (eg. Figma)
- You have an entrepreneurial mindset - you want to be working on exciting, big problems and understand the commercial reasons behind them
- You are a self-starter who is comfortable working in a continually changing environment and dealing with ambiguity
- We are changing a huge financial industry - you are excited about being a part of this big opportunity (even if you know nothing about Insurance right now!)

- Experience designing a tech product
- Dabbled with HTML / CSS or any other programming language
- Experience in non-product design categories; publishing, illustration, animation, print, photography, etc
What the job involves
- We’re looking for a Junior UX/UI Designer who is driven by problem solving and designing great user experiences, but who also has strong convictions on what brilliant visual design looks like
- You’ll be joining our product and design team in a fast-paced and high growth tech scale-up environment
- In this role, you will work closely with our Head of Product, Chloe
- You will be collaborating with Product Managers and Engineers to understand customer needs, wireframe and prototype solutions and create fantastic high-fidelity designs
- It’s an exciting opportunity to get involved in projects that touch on every part of the company and grow fast as a designer
- Work as part of our collaborative product, design and engineering team in mapping out brilliant design solutions to tough user problems
- Design wireframes, prototypes, complete high-fidelity designs and write detailed specs
- Conduct user research to understand our customers needs better and help us to improve our customer experience
- Create reusable assets like UI libraries, icons, illustrations and infographics
- Help us add visual delight to our product that users will love
- Collaborate with our marketing and partnerships teams to use great design to drive critical business outcomes across our brands
- Of course, as a scaleup we’ll also expect you to roll your sleeves up and get involved wherever the company needs you

- 1) The process starts with an initial phone chat followed by an interview with our Head of Product
- 2) Then we’ll ask you to complete a take-home task which is timeboxed to 2.5 hours which you’ll present at an in-person interview, alongside meeting some members of the wider team

Our take
Urban Jungle was founded in 2016 by a team from both in and outside of the insurance industry. Jimmy Williams and Greg Smyth noticed that the insurance industry was moving at a really slow pace, hardly taking advantage of the available technology and often leaving customers behind, especially younger ones. Now Urban Jungle is the top rated home insurance provider in the UK.
Modern insurers have inherited, from their 80s predecessors, a highly inefficent general approach to the industry: when launching a new system, only new customers are included in it, while old customers remain in the old system. Customer Service Operatives at really big insurers are fishing in different systems to find people's records and that does not favour productivity at all. The challenge with Urban Jungle’s process is to build up the insurance experience from scratch taking advantage of the technology that has been developed in recent years, reducing costs and empowering customers.
Special attention needs to be paid to the insurance product. The responsiveness to the way people's risks are changing over time is a key aspect that insurers should always bear in mind. Adapting the insurance product to ever-changing needs is definitely the main challenge for Urban Jungle and its competitors, and the best way to do it is to keep continuous and direct contact with customers. Regularly testing the current insurance offer and showing readiness when adapting the product to a new necessity is the real turning point and what Urban Jungle is working for.
