What the job involves
- We’re looking for a React Web Engineer who’s excited to apply their frontend expertise within a high-impact Growth squad
- You’ll work in a cross-functional team, collaborating with marketers, designers, data analysts and UX writers, to grow our reach and help improve the financial health of our users
- You’ll be learning and working with Ruby on Rails alongside experienced engineers, expanding your backend skills
- Own and enhance technical touchpoints for marketing attribution across multiple platforms (e.g. Facebook, TikTok, Google, Rakuten, AppsFlyer, customer.io)
- Collaboratively working with Marketing and Data teams to set up efficient attribution pipelines, allowing for fast testing & iteration
- Working closely with our SEO Lead, optimise our website for SEO to improve search engine rankings for highly competitive keywords and drive highly motivated new users to the site
- Making informed delivery decisions based upon the overview of data being sent to / ingested from 3rd parties
- Getting involved in cross-cutting concerns that lift our entire engineering effort with the rest of the frontend chapter
- Taking part in shaping the work your squad does, not just the technical parts
- Delivery is a team sport, and we encourage everyone at Cleo to share their ideas, so you can expect to be involved in product ideation sessions, user research calls, design reviews, retrospectives, ways of working sessions, product demos, OKR reviews
- Within our Growth squad, you will be iterating and delivering quickly to help us gain greater insight into our users' needs and seeing your work having a material impact on the financial health of those most in need
- Our Tech Stack:
- Stack: Ruby on Rails monolith, React Native with TypeScript frontend, Python for ML, PostgreSQL on AWS
- Website Stack: NextJS, Dato CMS, Talwind CSS, Vercel for deployment
- Deployments: CI/CD via CircleCI and Heroku; backend deploys on every merge; weekly app releases to iOS/Android
- Quality: Peer-reviewed code, automated tests with Minitest, strong emphasis on quality and pragmatism
- Architecture: Moving toward modular design—monolith with microservice benefits through progressive refactoring
- Culture: Engineers drive technical strategy; everyone is an owner and every voice counts
Our take
People are increasingly not satisfied with the products being offered by traditional banks, which have proven slow to react to the needs of younger consumers who expect more from their everyday experiences.
Cleo was one of the first companies to make great use of chatbots that sit within Facebook's messenger app. This chatbot-first approach and Gen Z user base have given it strong virality. It now has millions of registered users, 99% of which are based in the US, leading to a decision to take a year break from the UK market to focus on its US Gen Z customers. And after a successful year in the US its now eyeing up a return to the UK.
Its Series C funding will help the company to double down in the US, where it will make a significant increase in employee headcount, and enable Cleo to maintain and expand its service during an economic downturn.
Financial advice delivered via bots is a crowded space, so Cleo benefits from having a strong brand presence. It has gone for very bold, fun, Gen Z-focused messaging which helps it to stand out from competitors such as Emma, Plum, and Chip.
