Who you are
- CPA, JD, or advanced tax degree (e.g., MST – Master of Science in Taxation) preferred
- 10+ years of progressive tax experience, including in-house and/or public accounting
- Deep expertise in ASC 740, US and Canada tax compliance, international tax, and transfer pricing
- Proven track record advising on tax implications of new business initiatives
- Strong knowledge of withholding tax rules and cross-border transactions
- Experience managing external advisors and cross-functional collaboration with accounting and legal teams
- Strong tax research skills, with the ability to analyze complex tax law and translate it into practical guidance
- M&A tax experience, including due diligence and deal structuring
- Comfortable working across multiple time zones with global teams and stakeholders
- Excellent communication and leadership skills
- Bilingual in Korean and English preferred
What the job involves
- WEBTOON seeks an experienced tax leader to oversee global tax reporting, compliance, planning, and strategy.
- This role will manage ASC 740 tax provision and reporting, tax compliance, international tax matters, transfer pricing / cross-border taxation, and tax planning for new business initiatives, while partnering closely with accounting, legal, and external advisors. We're looking for International Tax professional to help lead our worldwide tax function
- Oversee the global income tax provision process under ASC 740, including quarterly and annual reporting, in coordination with the global tax team
- Manage US and Canada tax compliance, including federal, state, provincial, and local filings
- Lead US - international tax planning and compliance (e.g., GILTI, BEAT, FTC) across WEBTOON's global operations
- Develop and maintain transfer pricing policies and documentation
- Provide tax planning and structuring support for new business initiatives, products, and markets
- Advise on tax due diligence, structuring, and integration for M&A transactions
- Manage indirect tax obligations (sales & use taxes, withholding taxes) and monitor tax law developments across jurisdictions, assessing business impact
- Maintain SOX compliance and documentation for tax processes and controls
- Oversee global mobility tax matters, including cross-border employee assignments
- Engage and manage external tax advisors, auditors, and consultants
- Partner closely with accounting and legal teams to ensure alignment on tax positions and risk management
- Support tax audits and inquiries from tax authorities
- Lead responses to US tax audits (IRS and state) and inquiries from tax authorities
Our take
Content is king and Wattpad has managed to create a platform that aggregates the most loved original writing content in the world, turning the traditional publishing industry on its head.
Where authors used to submit drafts to dozens of publishing houses in the hope of getting some eyeballs on their work, Wattpad opened up the process to millions of young authors by letting them easily submit their work, and fostering a community around their software that offers feedback and help.
The e-reading platform is now looking to double down on its strategy of taking its user-generated fiction and turning it into successful intellectual property upon which original series and movies can be based. However, a significant challenge for Wattpad is in producing original, marketable content from its platform, given the popularity of fanfiction, stories which are based on existing intellectual property.
Another challenge for Wattpad is the current economic conditions, which have affected much of the tech sector and are not sparing digital publishing. Having shelved bold plans for the future, it also laid off 15% of its workforce in March 2023. Having realigned for its current business needs, however, it is now well placed to weather the current market downturn.

Ivan Yuen
(Co-Founder)Prior to Wattpad, Ivan co-founded FeedM8 and served as the company’s CTO. Before that he was one of the first employees of Tira Wireless, where he helped grow the technical team and developed new and emerging wireless technologies. Ivan graduated from the University of Waterloo with a degree in Computer Engineering and also earned an MBA from the Rotman School of Management.
