Who you are

We're looking for talented teammates who’ll help us maintain strong teamwork and are passionate about driving results
Currently enrolled in a MS/PhD program in computer science, statistics, engineering, physics, or a related technical field of study
Familiarity with robotics, sensing, optics, or perception technologies
Experience analyzing data using Python
Ability to interpret multi-dimensional datasets and draw quantitative conclusions
Excellent communication skills and attention to detail

Desirable

Experience with developing and/or testing machine learning/computer vision/AI systems
Experience with different sensing modalities, especially lidar or camera
Experience with C++ / SQL

What the job involves

Waymo's Systems Engineering team works together to blend software and hardware systems in groundbreaking new ways
We set the high performance standards that ensure our vehicles run smoothly and keep passengers safe, then design and perform the tests that validate that performance
Research and understand the principles behind sensing and perception technologies used in Waymo autonomous vehicles
Analyze large amounts of data and draw statistical conclusions using Python and SQL
Work with hardware and software teams to derive system-level requirements
Summarize and communicate the results in technical reports and presentations

Our take

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company that began as the Google self-driving car project in 2009. After initial development, it secured permits to deploy autonomous ride-hailing services in cities including Phoenix and San Francisco, but has recently hit a major bump in the road with safety concerns that resulted in a recall of over 400 self-driving cars.

With the autonomous driving industry already besieged by setbacks and public distrust, this development does Waymo no favours. That said, as an industry leader there remains the possibility it will see out the storm, but massive attention will need to be given to rebuilding trust with consumers if this is to be the case.
