- As our next frontend engineer on the Customer Experience team, you should have 6+ years of frontend software development experience in high-growth startups, plus:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent work experience
- You have keen product and customer sense. You’ll impact customers globally and be crucial in Whatnot earning their trust. You first think about users, rather than the best technical solution
- Rapidly write and ship high-quality code, and are excited to pick up new technologies and languages in areas of the stack you’re unfamiliar with
- We primarily use JavaScript and React on the frontend
- An interest or experience in Machine Learning solution development
What the job involves
- Customer Experience engineering builds products, tools and pipelines to make Whatnot more helpful, our support teams more efficient, and our buyers and sellers happy and satisfied
- This frontend role will be focused on building the fundamental Seller, Order and Support experiences for all buyers and sellers
- You’ll build products which power core buyer and seller experiences at Whatnot
- You’ll implement helpful customer order and shipment experiences, LLM-based chat functionalities, classification and automation flows, and tools to enhance Whatnot's usability for our vast customer base
- Have direct influence over core business metrics with the goal of increasing retention, CSAT and DSAT scores as our product continues to scale
- Build from scratch reliable core data flows ensuring world-class user experience across the entire product landscape
Our take
The collectable toy market is large, and Whatnot has built a unique social platform that enables sellers to use livestreams to showcase their products and reach more buyers. The company’s focus is on collectable toys, some of which are rare and can cost thousands of dollars. It's also expanded to sports cards, coins, comics and more.
The idea of Whatnot was led by buyer trends. Instagram's live feature became a popular place for selling toys and trading cards, but of course was not set up to facilitate bidding or handling payments after a sale occurs. Whatnot combines live showcasing with follow-up sale capabilities, thus serving the community in a more novel way than established collectibles market players such as eBay.
The company has grown fast. It was established in 2019 and has already expanded from its original category - Funko Pop figurines - to Pokemon cards, pins, sports cards, and many more. There is still plenty of scope for expanding into new categories, as the company aims to establish itself as the go-to for this large niche, which will be facilitated by the strong levels of funding that Whatnot has raised.
