Company mission

To aid the sustainable reform of our food system by giving everyone a chance to save our planet in an effortless way.

Our take

About one third of food produced in the world ends up in landfills. Much of this is due to marketing - seasonal packaging and short best before dates mean that the food is still completely edible, but wholesalers are unable to sell it in stores which means it will go unused. Enter Motatos, a Swedish startup which swoops in, buys up the produce, and retails it online at a discount to environmentally conscious (and thrifty) customers.

Motatos positions itself as a rival to high street chains such as Aldi and LidL, and claims to offer up to a 60% discount over its brick and mortar competitors. While customers may be reluctant to purchase discarded food even at a discount, Motatos banks on the brand recognition of its household name products to ensure trust with its users, and its careful price tracking and daily offerings serve to make its prices irresistible.

Since its founding in 2014, the company has recirculated over 60,000 tonnes of food and consumer products and raised over $142.2M in funding. And as consumers become more and more conscious of the environmental impact of their daily lives, Motatos is only going to see more growth.
