Company mission

To make infrastructure intelligent.

Role

Who you are

  • You’re a generalist; happy to dive into anything, whether its writing backend data pipelines and connectors, building React UI web applications, or doing ad-hoc data analysis
  • You have experience developing modern web applications and can write excellent production-quality code with a strong foundation in software best practice, testing, mocking and debugging
  • You’re looking to work for a start-up! You can thrive in an environment where outcomes aren’t always clearly defined, responding to change and helping shape the software features that we ship to our customers

Desirable

  • You are proficient in writing Python or data pipeline development
  • Familiarity with the frameworks and languages in our tech stack. Some of the languages and frameworks we use include: Web Applications: React, Typescript, Vert.x & Kotlin Data Pipelines: Python, Snowflake DB, Dagster, DBT & Kafka Platform: Kubernetes, AWS & Terraform
  • Experience with DevOps and cloud providers like AWS
  • Experience working with time-series, location-based data
  • Experience handling mobility data (e.g. GTFS, SIRI-VM, DATEX 2)

What the job involves

  • As a Software Engineer you will be designing and implementing data pipelines and applications across the stack, powering data-driven decision making in transport infrastructure ️
  • Building web applications that allow users to interact with and understand mobility data. For example allowing users to analyse bus delay so they can optimise bus routes, or predicting traffic flows so they can plan road maintenance
  • Develop data connectors and pipelines to process sensor feeds or integrate with third-party platforms
  • Integrate real-time streaming analytics and machine learning into our data platform

Application process

  • After reviewing each application, we invite candidates to a 30-minute phone chat. During the chat, we provide you with more information on Alchera, answer any questions you have, understand your background and what you are looking for in your next role. If it seems like a mutually good fit, we'll progress to a remote interview with our wider team
  • We ask candidates to prepare a short presentation on a previous project they've carried out and present it to the Alchera team on the day. This is so you can meet the whole company and they can get to know you. Following your presentation, two interviews will focus on the core competencies and culture fit we're looking for in the role, each with time for questions and broader discussion

Our take

Alchera Technologies was established in order to provide real-time data and analytics for infrastructure operators, allowing data-driven decision-making to drive better transport networks. It delivers this by providing operators of road infrastructure with historical, real-time, and predicted information about roadways so they can make decisions based on evidence instead of gut instinct.

Along with enabling more effective traffic management and optimisation of road network capacity, Alchera helps decrease travel time, improve bus networks, and reduce environmental impacts. It differentiates itself from existing solutions by using AI to drive better insights into data at scale, operating with lower cost, higher reliability, and greater coverage. Combining existing sensor networks - such as mobile, internet of things, and CCTV - can construct powerful recommendations for operators.

So far Alchera has partnered with National Highways, Transport for London, and councils including York, Lancashire, Oxford, Cambridge and many more. In January 2024, Costain and Alcher delivered work for National Highways to use predictive analytics to optimise road maintenance, saving cost and reducing the impact on customer journeys.
