Our take

The US is soon set to have its largest elderly population of all time. Plus, the majority of older Americans live alone, often very far from immediate family members. In a country where over 40 million people are providing unpaid care to someone aged 50 or over, Wellthy is tackling a long-overlooked issue by matching unpaid caregivers with social workers.

Once registered on the site, a social worker takes on the role of care coordinator and can become responsible for a range of tasks including medical paperwork, insurance claims, treatment organization and in-home care arrangements.

Rather than going straight to the carers themselves, the company is attempting to scale quickly by approaching employers to add its service to employee benefits. This is particularly appealing to employers since many have found caregiving to be a critical barrier to re-entry for their employees. Hence this approach bodes well for Wellthy's continued success.
