Our take

The development of self-driving cars presents enormous opportunities for transportation, shipping, and ride-hailing industries, but getting these cars to run flawlessly is difficult. Cameras and radar sensors are used to detect obstacles for safe automated driving, but existing technology does not analyze enough data to meet these expectations.

Aeva builds sensory perception technology that maps the physical world around a vehicle on a granular basis to contribute towards the development of fully self-driving cars. The sensory system relies on what the company describes as being the world’s first 4D LiDAR-on-Chip. This technology comprises sensors that detect objects and events up to 300m away, recognize velocity-per-pixel, and are immune to interference from neighbouring frequencies.

Companies such as Tesla are already developing successful and safe fully self-driving software for their cars, but Aeva's approach to LiDAR presents some serious competition to the existing camera-based technology. Despite further competition from Luminar and Velodyne, Aeva remains unique and has even secured a partnership with NVIDIA to integrate its 4D LiDAR into the DRIVE Hyperion autonomous vehicle platform, placing its technology at the core of how future self-driving cars will see, understand, and safely navigate the road.
