Our take

Over two thirds of metropolitan Australian funerals are cremations, and this has been the case ever since cremation overtook burial as the funeral of choice back in 2015. It’s a funeral arrangement that’s taking off in many corners of the globe, reportedly because of its lower cost and carbon emissions, and a general shift of attitudes towards the way we think about death. Consequently, traditional funeralcare services don’t quite meet the needs of today’s changing demographics. Bare is one of the new companies looking to redefine what the industry looks like.

Bare focuses on providing high-quality cremation and other end-of-life services at affordable prices. It helps organize non-traditional memorials and funerals, like beachside walks and more modest, uplifting affairs. It’s a smart and conscientious new niche to be filling, with millennials and Generation Z reporting a greater preference for lighter and personal funerals.

To remain competitive with the similarly priced Australian Direct Cremations and full-service provider Lady Anne Funerals, Bare has started to innovate off the back of its 2022 Series A. Its $10 million AUD will be used to support investments in new digital products and physical infrastructure.
