Sensat creates digital twins, or digital representations of real world locations, to help users better understand the physical world. Choosing to target the historically non-innovative construction industry, the company has also received interest from other organisations, and it's likely that there are many possible applications yet to be considered.
Sensat's success so far has been clear. Its tech has been a central part of over £10.5 billion worth of major infrastructure builds, and it was the first company in the UK licensed to fly autonomous drones Beyond Visual Line of Sight over major motorways. In general, the company is considered ahead of the curve in construction-focused digital twin technology, and it will be interesting to see how it develops into the future.

Company performance across all departments is discussed openly so that everyone understands how their work fits into the company strategy. Employees can submit any question to be answered by the CEO or leadership team at the weekly whole company meeting. Employees are encouraged to give feedback regularly and this is often shared publicly.

There are high expectations of all employees, but this results in people stretching themselves to do their best work. Sensat has a stringent hiring process, so once a new hire begins they are trusted and given a high degree of autonomy.

Despite the turbulence of 2020, the Sensat team have maintained amazing energy and team spirit working remotely. We have taken part in virtual social events and workout sessions. There are excellent mental health provisions to look after anyone who is struggling. We all look out for each other and are friends as well as colleagues.

We (engineers) are the ones who specify what needs to be done in partnership with leadership. Our opinion is highly valued and taken in consideration. Once agreed upon what to do, no more meetings or wasting time, straight to coding! :)

Autonomy

Transparency is brought to a brand new level at Sensat - from the CEO, to CTO, to Team leads, we'll share almost all information with the entire company, and need to justify the ones that are not to be shared, which is quite rare and usually to do with being noise.

From my own experience, I've been recognise inumerous times, be it as work of every other week, or via public praising, or via compensation or promotion, and it's only been a year! Others will get similar treatment, public praises and awards as I did. It's really fair and surprising the way that Sensat focus on people.

At Sensat, it's really clear that leadership is dedicated to transparent communication. Meeting minutes from our board meetings are shared company-wide the next day and the CEO shares his views in the next session of our weekly town halls. More than just sharing information though, our leadership team is focused on making sure everyone in the company has the tools to understand the information that's shared. This is done by running sessions on different topics like how to read a PnL sheet or how the investment cycle works. As someone who has never worked in a start-up before, it's fascinating and really helpful to have all of these topics discussed out in the open.

The construction and infrastructure industry is one of the most technologically laggard industries in the UK, it's also where more than 50% of the UK's waste comes from. I love that at Sensat we're working to bring technology to this sector where we have the potential to have a massive impact on the efficiency and environmental impact of the industry.

I honestly can't say enough how amazing the people are at Senat! I started in March, just weeks before lockdown started, even with being remote, I instantly felt welcomed by everyone at the company. From our weekly random coffee buddies to individuals checking in ad hoc, this is a group of people who genuinely care about each other and are always there to help anyone in need.

When I joined Sensat, I quickly recognised what a great opportunity I got. As a test engineer I was mentored by a senior colleague, I got all the support to learn how our product works and how can I support it from the quality side. A few months later I was thrown in the deep end, but I couldn't be more grateful for it, as I learnt and grew a lot. My colleagues don't hesitate to help and share knowledge of their professions with each other. I have a team I can count on any time if I need help, advise or just a friendly chat.

I think Sensat's jaw-dropping product reflects perfectly the exceptional people who work on it. I am truly honoured to be the member of such an extremely intelligent, talented and ambitious group of people. Every one of the employees have their uniquely shaped personality and this is what makes Sensat great. We don't only support each other at work professionally, but it really feels like we are a big family.

When I started looking for a new opportunity, it was very important to me to find a company that makes a difference. When I started getting familiar with Sensat's values and mission, I knew I am at the right place. I love to see that we can help an industry to become more digitalised and make their work so much easier, faster and more efficient without wasting resources.

From day 0 (interview process) it is clear that development is a key part of life at Sensat. This generally comes in two forms: firstly (and perhaps the most valuable) is the openness and transparency at the business, you don't always realise it in the moment but the amount of general learnings you are exposed to as a business is built in front of your eyes is invaluable. Secondly, management is really keen on helping people 'master their craft' and develop in their personal and professional ambitions. They say that a business is made by its people, and if those people are supported to improve then the business will only benefit.

We have an all hands called Prime Minister's Questions (PMQs) every Wednesday at 12pm. The topics and formats of this vary, but clear communication is always a feature. As it says on the tin, it is an opportunity to ask any question and get an honest answer. JD (CEO) also shares all the information from board meetings (minutes) and no information/dashboard is hidden (though it could sometimes be easier to find).

It's exciting (and I count myself lucky) to work on such transformational technology day to day, Sensat's mission is to help industries shape a sustainable world, and we do this by building the next generation of the internet and digital technology capable of reading the real world. I'm inspired by the number of applications and reach of what we're building - it is so much bigger than a banking app or dating app. I'm also proud of the boundaries we push - we're 100% on an exploratory journey and that motivates me every day.

My colleagues at Sensat are very smart and come from very diverse background and experiences. This gives me the opportunity to learn a lot from others and my function but also from other functions across the business. That, combined with the trust and autonomy I'm given, makes me feel I've learning something new everyday and at speed I've never experienced before.

The company has a generous Personal Development budget that allows all employees to invest in themselves and take time to learn new skills or improve existing ones. There are also several internal interest groups that discuss particular topics and help others learn about it (for example the "Frontend engineering group"). Finally, leadership is extremely open and accessible and it's easy to be mentored and learn from them.

Our CEO is super transparent and gives us all an insight into his high-level strategic meetings. We have all had constant re-assurances over the last 12 months in what have been uncertain times. Not once at Sensat have I felt let-down or have the senior leadership team not been open with us on stuff they don't even need to share.
